Saxton U/17s versus Garforth U/17s
29th June 2009
Saxton 156-6, Garforth 50 a.o
After last week’s disappointment of losing to St Chads the U/17s were eager to get back to winning ways and regain a top position in the table. Coe won the toss and chose to bat 1st for a change, a first for the season, would it pay off?
The usual pair of Hare and Fletch strode out to meet the enthusiastic Garforth fielders; Hare looked nothing like the apparent man in form when he was dropped 1st over following a shocking stroke. Fletch soon departed, bowled again! Ginger Wonder then came in, soon to be joined by Peiter Fan. A daft shot meant J.B lasted just 3 deliveries before skying a simple catch to the mid on fielder. Saxton 3 down and the game had barely begun! Wragg next, he played a solid couple of overs while Bally was unleashed at the other end with some ferocious drives and cuts.
Wragg soon fell for a miserly 1 run and Saxton were looking a bit shaky after 10 overs, the score reading 58-4! Cheeky Monkey next and himself and GW enjoyed a good couple of overs plundering the Garforth bowling before Bally played on for a well made 36. 76-5, 13 overs gone. Matthews came in and mentioned to Coe he couldn’t defend and would instead choose to take the attack to the bowlers, it paid off! By the end of the innings he was still standing for a well made 36* and Coe having retired 53*. Baxter didn’t last long and Brown contributed a good looking zero unbeaten.
So Saxton came out to bowl, Garforths top order didn’t last long and capitulated to Peiter Fan and Coe with 3 wickets between them. With Garforth looking shaky the ball was spread around with all the team getting a couple of overs. The wickets fell to Wragg (2) Ball (1) Jefferson (1) Akko (1) Matthews (1) Barrat (2) Coe (1) Fletcher (1), with Brown the only bowler failing to contribute. A special mention to the fielding coaches this week who did their jobs well, with 3 storming catches, one from Fletcher at mid wicket and 2 stunning grabs from Bally at Gully! So Garforth all out for a dismal 50 runs, and a 106 run win for the young team from Saxton.
Still a chance of winning the league if they remain unbeaten and with more displays of the same standard Saxton will look good for the title.
