Match Report

Friday 16th July

Bilton U13 v Saxton U13

This was always going to be a difficult game against a team that had not lost all season.

Having won the toss Saxton elected to bat and tried to set the Bilton team a total that would challenge them. Olly Heaton opened the batting and proceeded to play a very patient innings of 21 – the total turned out to be Saxton’s top score. His opening partner Jake Buckle looked in good form until the pair went for one quick single too many and Jake was run out by some distance.

In came Jake Barber who decided that running singles was far too risky and started to deal in boundaries with 2 fours and a six before being caught. At this stage the score was 47 for 2 and a good start had been made.
Unfortunately this was the signal for their spinners to come on and with a turning wicket giving them a lot of assistance, Saxton could only manage a total of 68. Remember that if the ball is spinning then get as far forward as you can. Don’t play back to it.

Despite a relatively meagre total however, the Saxton bowlers had learnt lessons from previous games and gave very little away in terms of extras – this aspect has shown considerable improvement in the last few weeks as has the fielding. Bilton however made batting look pretty easy and were able to reach the total for only one wicket.

Overall then good fielding matched by vastly improved bowling. If this is carried on to the last game against Wetherby then we should have a good finish to the season.
